=====Mycelium lab: growing intelligent beehives=====

**Concept.** Long term project. Growing intelligent beehives from mycelium and recycled waste, straight into the final guerilla beehive shape. The  purpose is to populate Brussels city with a network of intelligent guerilla beehives. These are beehives that offer shelter to a bee colony 'in the wild' - bee populations that are not domesticated but that are monitored from a distance in a non-intrusive way while they are collecting information about the urban environment.
The system is set up as a fully organic, cradle to cradle, circle. If the bees decide to leave the hive in search for another home, the hive (with integrated electronics) will bio-degrade and compost completely.

**Goal:** raise public awareness on ecological (biopolitical) problems in cities (case study Brussels)
involve public participation (how? tbc)

=====mycelium laboratory=====
Recycled coffee ground for mushroom/mycelium growing.
Coffee ground is already sterilised by the hot water and needs no further sterelisation.
Coffee ground can also be used in combination with a binder, to mould it in a custom made shape.
The term binder is used in papermaking to refer to an organic or inorganic material added to the pigment in the manufacture of coated paper that assists the pigment particles in adhering to the paper fibers. Organic binders include starch, casein, and soya protein. Starch is the most widely used, and is obtained from a variety of agricultural sources, such as corn, wheat, potatoes, etc. Higher-quality papers use synthetic binders, typically styrene-butadiene and vinyl acrylic latices, which allow for greater gloss, ink holdout, and flexibility in post-printing operations such as folding and binding. (See Coating.) Binders are also known as adhesives. 

Resins also determine the ink qualities of gloss, hardness, and adhesion. Resins are either derived from natural sources (such as rosin, derived from the distillation of turpentine obtained from the sap of pine trees) and lac (secreted by the lac insect, used in shellac), or are synthesized by the polymerization of other materials. Commonly-used resins include alkyds, asphaltum, coumarone-indene resin, fumaric resin, gum, maleic resin, Nylon, phenolic resin, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride acetate, and shellac. Resins are also used in varnishes, lacquers, and other materials.

Ik zou willen mycelium groeien op verschillende gerecycleerde ondergronden. Niet direct voor de paddestoelen, maar vooral voor het mycelium als bindmiddel tussen de gerecycleerde materialen. Bij een kleine research online leerde ik dat je het mycelium o.a. kan laten groeien op koffiedik, en op het kaf van boekweit. Ik zou dit ook willen proberen op kaf van lavendel bvb. en andere materialen uit mijn tuin. En ik wil dan bepaalde vormen gebruiken als basis, deze vullen met het (gerecycleerde en gepasteuriseerde) substraat gemengd met broed. En dan maar hopen dat de mycelium de vorm schoon volgroeit.
Ik heb nu een paar heel specifieke vragen aan jou:
- welk broed moet ik hiervoor best gebruiken? pleurotus?
- online staat dat je na ± 5 à 6 dagen de 'fungus moet killen' :) => anders blijft die natuurlijk doorgroeien in vruchtlichamen
hoe doe je dit? Hoe kan je de mycelium + substraat behouden als nieuw (en recycleerbaar) materiaal, zonder dat er overal paddestoelen uit opschieten?
- denk jij dat het mycelium zou groeien op koffiedik en op lavendel kaf?
Ik wil graag het experiment wagen. De vorige keren dat ik met jouw broed gewerkt heb, binnen (met de Pleurotus) ging dat heel goed. Het mycelium doorgroeide mooi de houtsnippers van wilg. Hier is een time lapse filmpje dat ik toen gemaakt heb:

Wat betreft het gebruik van mycelium voor vormgeving, daar heb ik ook reeds vraag naar gehad, vooral voor ficeerstukken voor verzending ipv isomo hulpstukken. Voor deze toepassing zou het gebruik van mycelium echter te duur uitvallen.
Er is alleszins een snelgroeiende zwam nodig, misschien zijn elfenbankjes wel meest aangewezen, ook al omdat ze op substraat niet vlug tot vruchtzetting overgaan. Ik moet zelf nog eens testen of ze op een niet-gesteriliseerd substaat groeien. Ik denk dat de fugus killen na 5-6 dagen toch wel wat vroeg is : geen enkele zwam bindt de materialen voldoende aan elkaar na zo'n korte periode. Beter na 10 dagen. Vóór het 'killen ' moet je het mycelium eerst uitdrogen, anders gaat het achteraf rotten. Na het uitdrogen kan je ev. killen met warmte, misschien microgolven. De meeste fungi van hogere schimmels zijn reeds door bij °t tusen 40-50 °C.
Koffiedik moet je eerst mengen met een luchtiger substraat zoals gehakseld stro of kempscheven en ev. ook met houtschavelingen. Een medium dat nat en klef is zoals koffiedik, wordt anaëroob en daar groeit geen enkele hogere zwam op (aëroob !)

Ik wil dit doen als 'artistiek experiment' om te zien hoe ik materiaal uit de tuin kan gebruiken voor andere doeleinden.
Ik zag idd. online dat verschillende firma's bezig zijn met mycelium ddorgroeid substraat als vervangmiddel voor isomo.
Maar bij mij is het om 'vormen' te groeien die ik interessant vind. Ik zal beginnen met een halve bol, en zien wat het wordt.
Ik zal dan eerst eens proberen met elfenbankjes. Waarom spreek je ervan dat je moet nagaan of dit kan groeien op niet-gepasteuriseerd materiaal?
Als ik werk met kaf van planten, kan ik dit toch eerst koken zodat het gepasteuriseerd is? En als ik met koffiedik als basis werk, dat is toch ook gepasteuriseerd, want met kokend water begoten? Maar geen nood: een experimentje opzetten, en dan zien wat het wordt en eruit leren. En dan met volgend experiment aanpassingen doorvoeren.
Practisch:
Hoeveel broed heb ik nodig om volgende testjes te doen:
1. een halve bol, 25 à 30cm diameter, gevuld met gepasteuriseerde laveldelzaaddoosjes, gemengd met gehakseld houtschaafsel, en geïnoculeerd met broed (van elfenbankje)
2. een halve bol, 25 à 30cm diameter, gevuld met koffiedik gemengd met gepasteuriseerd stro en houtschaafsel, en geïnoculeerd met broed van elfenbankje
3. een ander mengsel uit de tuin, steeds weer op basis van stro en houtsnippers.
=> kan ik alles wat 'droog' of 'uitgedroogd' is gebruiken om te mengen met het stro tot een basissubstraat? Ik denk bvb. ook aan de uitgebloeide bloemetjes van wilde tijm, daar staat mijn tuin vol van. Deze zijn heel fijn en heel droog. 
De bedoeling is dus -voorlopig- enkel om een soort van 'natuurlijke' sculpturen te laten groeien …

Waarom ik dat eerst zou moeten nagaan : het  elfenbankje is wel een soort die aggressief groeit, maar daarmee is het nog niet zeker of ze op gepasteuriseerd substraat wil groeien. De enige zwam die, voor zover ik wet, dat probleemloos doet, is de oesterzwam. De meeste andere kan je enkel op gesteriliseerd substraat kweken, maar bij elfenbankjes heb ik dat nog niet geprobeerd. Het verschil is : gepasteuriseerd is een 5 à 10 min op 65-75 °C (dus zeker niet koken !) en gesteriliseerd is 1.5 uur op 121°C onder druk. Achteraf is gepasteuriseerd substraat veel minder vatbaar voor infecties, je kan het dus zonder speciale installatie doen. Om gesteriliseerd substraat te enten, heb je een steriele kamer nodig, anders komen er opnmiddellijk ongewenste infecties. Wat koffiedik betreft : het is verhit geweest, maar na een tijd gaat het effect weg. D.i. hetzelfde als je gepasteuriseerd materiaal neit onmiddellijk na het afkoelen ent : het raakt eveneens spontaan geïnfecteerd (bacteriën, gisten, lagere schimmels).
Koffiedik moet alleszins gemengd worden met andere materialen (gehakseld stro, vlaslemen, kempscheven e.d.) anders is het te compact, nat en klef en kan de zwam er niet op groeien. Je moet het dus eerst luchtiger maken en niet te nat door het te mengen, en dan pas te enten.
Met tijmbloempjes moet je dan weer opletten : de etherische olie die erin zit remt de groei van het mycelium.
Wat ik voor jou kan doen, is broed van elfenbankjes aanmaken en het je geven om een testje mee te doen. Je hoeft het niet te betalen. Ondertussen zal ik het ook testen of het op gepasteuriseerde materialen groeit. Het is een mycelium dat bij uitdrogen heel taai wordt (alle polyporen) en volgens mij meest geschikt voor derg. toepassingen.

WAT ZIJN VLASLEMEN ?
Vlaslemen zijn afkomstig van de vlasplant die in West-Europa wordt geteeld in Belgie, Nederland en Frankrijk. Tijdens het zwingelproces scheidt men de vezels en de kernen van de vlasstengel. De verbrijzelde kernen worden lemen genoemd. Vlaslemen zijn 100% plantaardig en worden al eeuwen gebruikt als stalstrooisel voor runderen varkens en andere neerhofdieren. Tegenwoordig worden moderne onstoffingstechnieken gebruikt om de lemen stofvrij te maken voor o.a. paarden.

The Stropharia Rugoso Annulata is a first experiment in a series to grow edible mushrooms in the so-on edible rooftop garden. We choose this specimen of mushrooms to start with, as it is relatively easy to grow on mulch, so one does not need the more complex and delicate method of working with spawn on logs.
Over the weekend, I spend a saturday afternoon by cutting willow-wood into woodchips. According Mycobois, the supplier of the mushroom-brood, this is an appropriate kind of wood to grow the King Stropharia. Early february, I spread the spawn over 2 square meters, on a wind-protected and relatively shady spot in the rooftop garden. Over the spawn I spread the willow woodchips in a layer of 10 cm. In the top layer of the woodchips I divided the rest of the spawn insmall holes, 20cm apart from each other. Along the information, the mycelium should start growing through the woodchips, and in a few months the whole surface of the chips should be covered by mycelium roots.
Around the months of may/june, I can expect the fruits, the Stropharia mushrooms. This should go on over a few months, till it becomes too cold in october.

Unlike many other members of the genus Stropharia, it is widely regarded as a choice edible and cultivated for food.
The king stropharia can grow to 20 cm high with a reddish-brown convex to flattening cap up to 30 cm across, the size leading to another colloquial name godzilla mushroom. The gills are initially pale, then grey, and finally dark purple-brown in colour. The firm flesh is white, as is the tall stem which bears a wrinkled ring. This is the origin of the specific name which means “wrinkled-ringed”.
It is found on wood chips and bark mulch across Europe in summer and autumn. Described as very tasty by some authors, king stropharia is easily cultivated on a medium similar to what it grows on naturally.

02/05/2011:
The plastic bag is filled with willow woodchips mixed with pleurotus ostreatus spawn. It took 4 weeks for the mycellium to overgrow the woodchips. The 5th week, the mushrooms started to come out the fissures in the plastic bag.
During 5 days and 5 nights I took a picture of the growing mushrooms, every 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the flashes didn’t went off several times, which gives some jumps in the steady growth pace.
But the whole is a nice example of a natural time bending process, 5 days and nights compressed in 30 seconds.
